Natural care for babies skin is not a newly created trend rather it’s a comeback of long practiced rituals around bathing and moisturising the baby skin without the use of chemicals and preservatives.
Over the past couple of decades, excessive usage of chemicals and preservatives in different baby skin care products like soaps/cleansers, skin moisturising, massage oils, balms, powder etc. have raised many skin concerns forcing people to go back to traditionally used oils and herbs.
Different cultures around the world used different oils and herbs as per the availability in their regions for example the south east Asian people used coconut oil, Greeks used olive oil, Africans used Shea butter, Indian used sesame oil, mustard oil and coconut oil depending upon the regional crop availability, Romans used lavender etc. All with the same purpose to nourish & protect the baby skin to keep it healthy. With globalisation bringing in ease of availability of different oils and herbs from different parts of the world giving today’s mom multiple options to choose the best skin care oil or herb.
So here we bring to you the simple home remedies for bathing & moisturising baby’s skin with simple ingredients
Home remedy Ingredients –
Carrier oils –Cold pressed oils like sesame, mustard, coconut, flaxseed, almond, hempseed etc can be used.
Herbs- different herbs like asafoetida, carom, turmeric, nutmeg, garlic, sweet flag, lavender, calendula, chamomile, rose, ginger, neem etc. These herbs can be infused in mustard oil, sesame oil, and coconut oil.
How to prepare –Choose the oils and herbs you wish to prepare the massage oil. Add herbs to oil like coconut or mustard or sesame to prepare the infusion. Sieve the infused oil and add to other cold pressed oils of your choice. Single ingredient oil like sesame or mustard alone can also be used to massage the baby skin.
How to use – Use it as a massage oil preferably once a day 30 minutes before the bath. Bath is important on a regular basis however regular bath is difficult in cold climatic conditions. In cold regions make sure the baby does not catch a cold hence warm the room before massaging the baby.
Home remedy Ingredients
Herb – Different herbs including lentils – rich source of saponin like shikakai, anantmool, manjistha, soapnut, liquorice, oats, rose, chamomile, lavender, calendula, basil, turmeric can be used to prepare powder cleanser for the baby skin.
Oils – Cold pressed oils like coconut, sesame, jojoba, pumpkin, almond, hempseed, neem, etc can be used to make soap. Essential oils – Steam distilled edible essential oils like lavender, chamomile can be used to make the powder cleanser or soap more therapeutic and aromatic.
How to prepare –Powder cleanser (ubtan) - Choose the herbs and fine powder them. Make sure to use lentils more than 40% in the recipe. Add the herb powders as you desire. Excess turmeric can stain the cloths hence use it in less than 10% of the recipe. Do not let the powder be grainy. It is important to fine powder it for a non-scrub feel. Add essential oil (optional) to it.
Soap – Take cold press oil like coconut, jojoba, sesame, shea butter, cow ghee, lavender essential oil and NaoH – caustic soda to prepare cold press soap. Please get acquainted with cold process soap making technique before initiating a batch.
How to use - Take 2 tablespoons of powder cleanser(ubtan) and make a running paste by adding tap water or steam distilled lavender/calendula/chamomile/Rose water. Apply it on the baby's body with a very light gentle massage, and then make the baby sit in cool water in summer and lukewarm water in winters for 5-10 minutes. You can apply the same paste on diaper rash gently but do not rub the rash area. Do not use soap after this bath. It provides good cleansing.
Moisturiser –Moisturising the skin after cleansing is an important highly beneficial step in skin care. Traditionally and even today the different oils and butters are used to keep the skin hydrated and moisturised. You really don’t need a lotion to keep your baby’s skin moisturised.
Any lotion be it any brand contains a mix of water and oils/butters. The same oils and butters that we have been using since ancient times. Hence using a lotion means application of chemicals and preservatives too. Know how?
Home remedy Ingredients – Jojoba oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, pumpkin seed oil, watermelon seed oil, almond oil etc.
Essential oils – steam distilled edible Lavender and Chamomile
How to prepare – You can prepare and apply a healthy lotion by applying any of these oils or a blend of these oils on the body immediately after the shower. This way you are not using the chemicals and preservatives on the baby skin
How to use – Use the oil immediate after the shower on the wet/ moist/damp skin.
This is a very cost effective remedy as compared to lotions available in the markets. The lotion's composition contains maximum water with minor oil content making it a running white liquid with composition necessity to add emulsifiers and stabilizers, often are synthetics/chemicals.
Water is free flowing in the tap hence why pay for it. When we buy a bottle of after shower oil or ingredients to prepare after shower oil at home, we pay only for the oils. A bottle lasts much longer than a bottle of a lotion as only a few drops of oil are needed for the skin moisturising. And above all you know what you are using on your baby’s skin.
Apart from the basic skin care, here we suggest you how to care for some common skin concerns that arises with baby skin
Change the diapers often.
Keep the diaper off the baby skin for some time to let the air dry the skin. This helps treat diaper rashes significantly. When changing the diaper ,make sure to wash the bum with normal temperature water and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Apply coconut oil, calendula and chamomile infused oil or balm. Do not use wet wipes as chemicals and preservatives in them can irritate the skin and make the condition worse. Do not talc.
We suggest using one oil at a time to check the suitability on the skin and add lavender or chamomile essential oil to it to prevent itch, soothe and heal the skin. Along with this ensure – baby skin is well moisturised the whole day and night. For this apply oil immediate after the wash/ bath anytime of the day. Apply oil as and when required 3-4 times a day.
Avoid hot water and prolong hot water baths. Use lukewarm water. Do not let the baby sit in water for long. Dress the baby in loose cotton fabric clothing only.
For home remedies to work effectively, it is important to use the right quality ingredient – oil or herb with right care. Therefore always look for edible and chemical & preservative free products even if it is meant for external purpose only.
Here is why SNAANA products are the best chemical and preservative free product for the babies.
Products and raw material – ingredients are prepared in-house at SNAANA to ensure right quality- pure ingredient/product for the consumer absolutely free from adulteration.
Products are prepared from the best raw material -edible oils, herbs. SNAANA do not believe in cosmetic grade ingredients at all.
Product formulation process and ingredients are 100% in connect with ayurveda principles, our mother nature.
Hence the products at SNAANA are unique – very different in colour, texture and consistency than the products that we usually find in the market in the name of natural, organic, chemical free products.
SNAANA wants to drag your attention to the fact that we are still living in a legal framework that was adopted in British times and has not been amended at the pace synthetics/chemicals have come into use in skin care. Import, manufacture, distribution and sale of skin care/ beauty products are regulated by Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940 and this law till date has not given a definite and uniform definition for usage of words on labels like natural and organic which is big-time responsible for misleading the consumers.
That is why what is packed in a bottle or jar in the name of natural, organic, ayurvedic is often not what it claims. Synthetic provide comfort and convenience to manufacturers in terms of making product cost effective and extending the shelf life but they harm our bodies. This is because we have never thought that these chemicals can make cause problems like migraine, cancer, hormonal disorders etc and much more in our bodies.
